An inquest has opened into the death of a newborn baby boy whose body was discovered at a Cambridgeshire recycling centre.

The boy – referred to as ‘Baby Unknown’ in the hearing – was found by staff at the Amey Recycling Centre, in Waterbeach, on November 29 last year.

Simon Milburn, area coroner for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: “It is likely the baby entered the recycling process in the building at approximately 11.20am.

“Staff at the site pressed the emergency alarm, disabling all processes.

“Police and ambulance were called. Ambulance attended and pronounced life extinct at 12.20am.”

It is not known when the baby was born.

A post mortem examination carried out at Addenbrooke’s Hospital was unable to provide a cause of death, which is now confirmed as “1A Ascertained”.

“Ongoing police enquiries have failed to confirm the identification of the baby boy whose body was found,” Mr Milburn added.

The inquest was opened at Peterborough Town Hall today (Thursday, July 20) and the hearing will be adjourned to a future date.

A day after the baby boy’s body was found, Cambridgeshire Police appealed to the baby’s mother to get in contact with officers.

At the time, Detective Superintendent John Massey said: “This is an incredibly sad and upsetting incident for everyone involved and we are in the process of trying to establish more details about what has happened

“We would like to make a direct appeal to the baby boy’s mother to get in touch with us – it may be she needs medical care or is in a vulnerable situation.

“We are trying our hardest to get to the bottom of what has taken place but we cannot do that alone, so I would also appeal to the public for their help.”
