A preschool in Cottenham has had a nature inspired makeover thanks to the work of a group of volunteers.
The volunteers from Kier Construction are used to building large buildings normally but turned their hand to creating a beautiful space for the children at the Ladybirds preschool.
During their work, the volunteers painted the preschool’s playhouse, created a bright nature themed walled mural, created a bark path, repositioned paving slabs and created a play area with painted tyres.
While on the job, the team also created planters to ensure that the children can enjoy watching nature flourish in their favourite space, fenced off an oil tank and created a friendship bench for the children to share.
Managers at the Ladybirds preschool, Carolynn Cundell and Emily Marks, said: “A really big thank you to Kier for organising the garden project for Ladybirds and to all the Kier employees who took part too.
“They all worked extremely hard and it was very much appreciated by the staff, parents and children.”
They added: “The children loved exploring the garden after the volunteers visited and made lots of comments like ‘wow, this is great’ and ‘I love my new school’.”
One of the individuals who volunteered was Tony Brixey, a safety, health and environment manager for Kier.
He said that giving back to the community is “so important” to Kier.
“We loved spending the day improving this important space so that children can enjoy the very special outdoor area at the school even more,” he said.
“We’re used to spending our days constructing large buildings, so it was a real pleasure to design and create a tiny space that we hope will have a big impact on the children for years to come.”
