Football clubs, wedding venues and a pub are some of the more unique places people will be able to vote in for this week’s election at East Cambridgeshire District Council.

On May 4, people across the district can head to a polling station to cast their vote.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm, with the votes due to be counted the following day (May 5).

Polling cards will have been sent out ahead of election day, telling people the polling station they should vote at, with some able to vote in slightly more unusual locations than just village halls and churches.

Here are the more unique polling stations in East Cambridgeshire:

  • Soham Town Rangers Football Club, Julius Martin Lane, Soham (Soham North ward).
  • The Coach House, The Red Lion, 17 High Street, Soham (Soham South ward) – This polling station is normally used as a wedding or party venue.

  • The George and the Dragon, 31 The Street, Snailwell, Newmarket (Fordham and Isleham ward)
  • Newmarket Town Football Club, Cricket Field Road, Newmarket (Wooditton ward)
  • The Granary Estates, Parsonage Farm Lane, Wooditton (Wooditton ward) – This site is also normally used as a wedding or event venue rather than a polling station.

What do I need to vote?

Currently, the district council has a Conservative majority with 16 councillors, with the Liberal Democrats being the largest opposition party with nine councillors. There are also two independent councillors.

This year will also be the first time people in England will be required to show a photo ID when they go to vote.

The law changed last year so that voters now have to show a photo ID before being issued with a ballot paper in polling stations for any election.
