Ely Eel Day is almost here, but this year there will be no live eels due to a change in policy which means the Environment Agency is unable to attend.

Traditionally, a tank of eels has been a regular feature of the annual festival, however Visit Ely have been informed that it will not be possible at the 2023 edition.

This is because of a change in the Environment Agency's event policy guidance.

Anna Bennett, event organiser and town centre manager at Visit Ely, said: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Environment Agency are unable to attend the Coronation Eel Day this weekend due to a change in their event policy guidance.

"This is very unfortunate at this late hour, but it’s simply out of our control.

"However, we are very pleased to announce we have smoked and jellied eels to eat, and stuffed (toy) eels to throw in our world famous competition.

"And, of course, our beautiful Eel-izabeth, parading along Ely High Street towards the Riverside, where all the activities begin."

The parade leaves at 10.30 am from Cross Green, Ely.
