East Cambridgeshire district councillor Matt Downey has been expelled from the council's Liberal Democrat group.

The expulsion was announced at a meeting of East Cambs District Council on Tuesday evening.

As a result, there are now 16 Conservatives, two Independents and nine Liberal Democrats councillors on the council.

Cllr Downey, who represents Ely East, last attended a meeting at the council on September 7, 2022 and now becomes a non-aligned Independent member of ECDC.

Cllr Lorna Dupre, leader of the Lib Dem group, has said Cllr Downey was was excluded from the Liberal Democrat group under its standing orders in accordance with the group’s procedures.

Cllr Downey has also been disqualified from the City of Ely Council for non attendance at meetings for a period of six months.

If Cllr Downey fails to attend a formal meeting of East Cambridgeshire District Council by March 7, he could also be disqualified under the six-months attendance rule.

Cllr Downey has been approached for a comment.
