A woman has been arrested after a suspected brothel was uncovered.

Cambridgeshire Police were patrolling the Histon Road area in Cambridge at around 7pm on February 20 when they visited a flat.

Officers suspected the flat may have been used as a brothel upon entry, and a 55-year-old woman from Cambridge was arrested.

She remains in custody at Parkside Police Station.

“Although this arrest was made after proactive patrols by officers, members of the public can also play a vital role in helping us to tackle sexual exploitation, modern slavery and labour exploitation,” said Sergeant Carl Fillary.

“Information helps us to build a picture of what is happening and could help us safeguard potential victims.”

Sgt Fillary added: “If anyone has any suspicions at all in their local area then we’d urge them to report them to us.”

Police have stated some of the warning signs of modern slavery or exploitation, which include people:

- not being able to come and go as they wish

- being under 18 and providing commercial sex acts;

- working in the commercial sex industry and having a pimp/manager;

- being unpaid or paid very little;

- working excessively long or unusual hours;

- not being allowed breaks;

- owning a large debt and being unable to pay it off;

- being recruited through false promises.
