Community Reports from Soham

Heartbeat Health Walk

On the morning of February 6, 15 people joined David Clarke and Linda Everitt for the three-mile walk around Soham.

Numbers were slightly less than usual due to a rather cold morning. However, those taking part enjoyed the Monday walk. They started at St Andrew's Church and with David leading they walked along Churchgate Street before crossing over Paddock Street to Kent’s Lane. They finished at the war memorial and by this time everyone was ready for refreshment.

Phoenix Club

Sheila Abbott welcomed everyone to the meeting in the Causeway Community Centre on the morning of February 8.

The morning's speaker was member of the club Yvonne Long who spoke about her career as a nurse.

She began her talk on her personal history before going on to talk about how she started her career as an auxillary nurse at Newmarket Hospital in May 1967, before being accepted in the new nurses school for older pupils in 1968.

This was three years of hard work and lots of study in class and so many on the wards before becoming a state enrolled nurse in 1971. Yvonne related some amusing tales while working on the wards.

At Christmas time, nurses and doctors got together for a variety concert in the main hall for patients and families to enjoy.

This was great fun. She was also privileged to lead the nurses for carol singing around the wards. In 1976, she decided she needed a change of career and moved to Soham to take up the post as a warden at The Causeway.

Yvonne closed her talk reading two poems related to nursing. Refreshments were served and the raffle was drawn. The next meeting on March 8 will start at 10am.

Over 60s Club

On the afternoon of February 10, Ruth Ginn welcomed everyone including a new member Margaret Lines and also the return of Maureen.

The afternoon's entertainment was provided by singer Kalamity Kate who sang many songs by popular artists. Refreshments were served nd Roger Holliday organised the raffle.
