A centre that aims to help more people understand waste issues in Cambridgeshire and beyond has opened its doors.

Cambridgeshire County Council announced the Waste Education Centre in Waterbeach is reopening in a bid to increase understanding of waste issues and actions to reduce the impact on the world.

Visitors will have the opportunity to learn how their waste is managed and the role they can play in creating a model of production and consumption of products.

They can also learn how to mitigate climate change and getting to net zero, nullifying the amount of greenhouse gases produced by human activity in Cambridgeshire.

Cllr Lorna Dupré, chair of the county council’s environment and green investment committee, said: “We are delighted that the Waste Education Centre has opened again.

"[This will help educate] schools and groups across the country on what we can do individually and within our communities to make a difference towards climate change."

Cllr Dupre added: "It is great to see the Waste Education Centre providing engaging activities to help the public learn more about the importance of recycling.”

Visitors can also visit the viewing platform in the materials recycling facility to see how recyclables are sorted.

A curriculum-based workshop to discuss wider waste topics including sustainability, waste minimisation and climate change is included, as well as an opportunity to learn how to properly reduce, reuse, repair and recycle waste.

The two-hour long visits to the centre are free.

It is open Monday-Friday between 10am and 4pm, with parking available for coaches as well as cars.

A waste education officer can also visit you instead if your group is unable to travel to the education centre as part of their outreach programme.

The officer can make a tailor-made presentation to a specific audience and cover how residents can reduce, reuse, repair and recycle their waste in their local areas.

Other topics include climate change, a model on how recycled materials are used and what carbon footprint is.

The presentations can be timed to suit your group, including weekday evenings and weekends.

The centre is now taking bookings from schools and community groups across Cambridgeshire.
