King’s Ely Junior raised more than £11,509 for the school’s chosen charities in 2022. 

Pupils, families and staff came together to raise the money through events and activities. 

Some of these included cake and ice cream sales, collections from cathedral services, bake sales, non-uniform days, a charity triathlon, a Christmas fayre and Christmas card designing. 

Every lent term, pupils in years three to eight nominate and vote for charities that they would like to support throughout the forthcoming year. 

Their chosen charities for 2022 were the National Deaf Children’s Society (Cambridge and Huntingdon branch) and the Spana Charity, which supports working animals across the globe. 

Thanks to the generosity of the King’s Ely Junior community, £11,509.35 was raised, which will be divided equally between the two charities. 

Head of King’s Ely Junior, Richard Whymark, said: “Each year at King’s Ely Junior, the children and staff elect charities to support through fundraising and awareness building within the school and the local community.  

“The variety of ideas put forward by the children is always impressive and voting for the charities which are ultimately selected is seen as a key element of the children’s collective voice within the school. 

“The children enjoy the activities they run and are keen to raise healthy sums to make a difference through the work of the charities they select.” 

He added: “Ultimately though, the work of the school community on behalf of the selected charities, is a reflection of how important it is for the children to build an appreciation and become considerate of the needs of others.  

“Through their work in support of charities, we seek to help them develop responsible and compassionate behaviours as they mature.  

“The children’s efforts, supported generously by parents and friends of the school, were fabulously successful in 2022 and we are looking forward to seeing what ideas they will select for 2023.” 

King’s Ely’s 2023 charities will be voted for and announced soon.
