Lloyd Groves has hinted that changes at Soham Town Rangers may need to be made if his side are to turn their fortunes around.

Groves was disappointed his team did not perform to expected standards in their 2-1 home defeat to March Town in the Cambs Invitation Cup first round on November 8.

Soham went behind 24 seconds from kick-off, but pulled level thanks to Ryan Sharman only for March to retake the lead moments before half-time.

“We’ve been too susceptible to conceding poor goals,” said Groves.

“It took 24 seconds for them to go 1-0 up through a lack of concentration and accountability, but we weathered the storm.

“We looked fantastic going forward and put the ball into good areas, but we didn’t convert our chances.”

Tuesday’s home reverse was Soham’s fourth loss in their last seven, despite earning a third win in 11 Eastern Counties Premier Division games at Haverhill Rovers last Saturday.

And the five-time Invitation Cup winners, who grew into a well-fought tie, were unlucky not to score another against an in-form March.

“We were on the front foot in the second half, but we showed that we’re struggling to convert and have given ourselves mountains to climb,” said Groves.

The Greens boss expected a better result from his team, who now go into back-to-back home games with Woodbridge Town on November 12, 3pm and Ely City in a league cup tie next Tuesday, 7.45pm, needing a result more than ever.

“We’ve got to go back to basics,” Groves added.

“There’s an element of trust you put into the players, but it soon becomes about personnel and changes will need to be made to turn our fortunes around.

“Football’s a very simple game but at the moment, we’re not ticking those boxes.”

*Ely City were also knocked out of the Cambs Invitation Cup on Tuesday night.

The Robins went down 3-0 at home to Cambridge United Development in a repeat of last season’s final.

Ely host league leaders Thetford Town at the Demcom Stadium on Saturday, 3pm.
