Littleport is ancient and modern, and this Sunday, it will be remembering its war dead along with all the villages, towns, and cities in the United Kingdom.

Some were never returned to their grieving families, and Littleport cemetery has a special garden of remembrance by the Wisbech Road entrance.

But 11 sons, husbands, fathers, and brothers, are interred in eight First World War and three Second World War, Commonwealth War Graves in the cemetery grounds.

Martin Goodearl, formerly of the Royal Engineers, is the new branch chair of the Royal British Legion (RBL) in Littleport.

He and his committee have organised the Remembrance Day parade that musters outside the Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club on Ponts Hill at 10.15am.

Marches off at 10.20am with the RBL contingent and standard bearers, Littleport Brass, local civic dignitaries including the chair of the Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club and the scouting and guiding groups with their leaders.

Martin said: “You do not need to be a former member of the armed forces to join the Royal British Legion.

“If you are interested, please contact our RBL secretary Penny on 01353 861037.”

Times change, and with the Peace came certain responsibilities for all who were left to ‘carry on’ right up to now and beyond.

None perhaps more so than for the parish council. And just this month it has opted to be called a town council.

For centuries, villagers living outside of the busier shopping, services, and entertainments centre, it was always “going into town.”

And there is a football team, Littleport Town FC, named thus when founded back in 1906; recently sponsored by local businessman - LG Motors’ Trevor Bailey.

With plenty of sporting activities on offer for all ages at the Leisure Centre - and the Littleport Ex-Servicemen's Club, we also have another thriving club, Littleport Rangers, established in 2009.

There are some other good changes of late – the vets Johnson and Scott have moved to new premises in 61 Wisbech Road and the Swan, that used to be the Black Horse, has new owners!

And at the historic Crown Inn, genial host Rob, who co-runs it with Sara, celebrated 13 years this week.
