There were 31 people living in Littleport in 1089 – about 4,500 less than today!

I think they would all be amazed, and proud, of their successors to the land that was then just a muddy settlement.

Mind you, many a garden and drove - and the surrounding fields – still hark back to those pre-reclaimed conditions.

And it was a happy throng who celebrated Halloween last weekend!

Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club – and a misnomer as you don’t need to be one to be a member – held the children’s Halloween party and it was a sell-out success.

Those who had made pumpkin faces took them to Littleport Fire Station, just across the road to the club, where they were lit and placed in the drill tower by the crew!

After the party they went across to the lowering of the jack-o’-lanterns and a wonderful demonstration of how this community and its clubs, pubs and services pull together.

Like everywhere else, Littleport suffers occasional anti-social behaviours in modern parlance.

But they are timeless annoyances as is made evident when after spots of such bother necessitated invoking the Removal of Nuisances Act in the 19th century!

On Saturday, November 5, the Ely Roller Skating Club are back at Littleport Leisure and host the Fun Skate in the morning after their medal winning foray last weekend.

Among them, newcomer Trinity Simser won a bronze, and having not competed for four years, coach Chloe Figgins won gold!

Littleport parkrun starts at the leisure centre at 9am and this week, Cathy Gibb de Swarte is running to raise awareness and sponsorship for the Camp Beagle campaign to free the MBR Beagles!

Also on Saturday, the Littleport Ex-Servicemen’s Club (I have dubbed ‘the Lex-S’) have got Soul Fusions 5, with guest DJ Chris Brown playing northern soul, Motown and disco from 8pm until late - £2 only!

On Wednesday, November 9, you can play ‘Poppy Bingo’ - eyes down at 7.30pm.

And our own Littleport Brass band, whose band room is at the rear of the club, will be leading the Remembrance Parade that sets off outside the Lex-S Club on Remembrance Sunday morning for the Parish Church of St George and the war memorial ceremony.
