Methodist Church

THE stewards welcomed the congregation to morning service at 10.30am, with prayers and notices. The Remembrance Day service was led by Tony Murfitt. The first reading was taken from the Old Testament. Hymns were sung and the names of local soldiers who lost their lives in the Second World War were read. A poem was read by Rosemary. The second reading was taken from the New Testament. The minister's sermon was based on remembrance.

Rev Bernard Arnold led the evening service at 6.30pm. Organists were Donald Monk and Alan Bulley.

Thursday: noon-1.30pm - Shoppers' Lunch.

Sunday: 10.30am - Morning service with Ian Weatherall; 6.30pm - Evening service with Ken Brown. Musicians will be Donald Monk and Helen Shanassy.

Countess Church

REMEMBRANCE Sunday and Suffering church Sunday were on the same day this year and had parallel themes, in thinking about those who suffer, and may die, for what they believe in. Those who suffered as a result of war were commemorated in the silence and in the reading of a poem. Those who suffer persecution for their faith were remembered in teaching, video and song.

Sunday: Family Service at 10.30am led by Paul Coghlan and will include the dedication of twins Jasmine and Eloise Booth. All are most welcome to join us for this service.

The Olive Tree

OUR act of remembrance during Sunday's service was followed by Holy Communion and a telling address by the Pastor, concerning the freedom won for us at such a great price, but which is now under threat in so many ways.

Saturday: 10.30am-3pm - Messianic (Christian) Educational Trust is holding a seminar at the Olive Tree. The speaker is Alex Jacob, a leader in the church's Ministry Among Jewish People, this year celebrating 200 years' of effective work in Jewish/Christian relations. The event is free but there will be opportunity to contribute to the costs and to bless this ministry.

Sunday: 10.30am - worship. We will mark the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church, remembering those Christians who suffer for their faith in countries where the freedom we enjoy is not known. Cr�che and Sunday School will be provided.

Friday: Open Door Caf� meet and make friends over refreshments. All are welcome at these events, from 10am till midday.

CHETTISHAM

Parish Church

CELEBRANT and preacher at St Michael and All Angels on Sunday was Rev John Sansom. The organist was Beth Stokes. The first lesson was read by Michael Richer and the offertory was presented by Lee Howard.

On Sunday afternoon the Rev Alan Hulme baptized Kenneth Howard, the son of Lee and Zoe Howard.

Sunday: morning prayer will be held at 9.15am.

HADDENHAM

Baptist Chapel

THE service for Remembrance Sunday was taken by Rev Jim Mullin. Joyce, Eddie, David and Alan were in the Music Group, with Ruth leading the singing. David welcomed everyone and gave out the notices. Home Groups will be on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

The service began with a prayer, followed by a video of people in poor countries, spreading the seed of hope. Alan read Revelations 12, v. 1 to 5. Rachel and Daniel took up the offering, followed by prayer. Jim spoke of Remembrance, followed by two songs. He then prayed for lost solders and loved ones, followed by the Lord's Prayer. The theme for his sermon was 'What is Remembrance Sunday for?'

This Sunday's service will be followed by Holy Communion for Remembrance with Rev Jim Mullin.

LITTLEPORT

St George's Church

REMEMBRANCE Sunday: The vicar presided and preached at the 8am Holy Communion. She also officiated and preached at the special 10.45am Remembrance Service. At 7.30pm a Band Concert and Act of Remembrance was held at the Leisure Centre.

No midweek services until building work on the church is completed.

LIVELY non-denominational Christian church meeting at the Regal in Hempfield Road.

Sunday services begin at 10.30am. Join us from 10.15am onwards for a cup of tea or coffee before the service. Cr�che is open from 10.15am and older children enjoy a separate meeting during the second half of the service. Afterwards, please join us for refreshments and a chance to chat.

Saturday: 8.30am - Prayer Breakfast at The Regal followed by packing shoe boxes for the Samaritan's Purse Shoe Box Appeal, which provides presents at Christmas for children who would otherwise not receive any.

St George's Church

THE United Service of Remembrance at 10.45am was led by the Rev Margaret Harper with a sermon by Pastor Peter Cockerton, reflecting on the lives and loss of village members during the two world wars. Les Lowe, as veteran, read the citation with Daniel Parsons representing youth. Prayers were led by the Girl's Brigade Captain, Jane Dunseath, and the Commitment by the Baptist Pastor Tudor Parsons.

Representatives of the Royal British Legion were present and wreaths were laid at the village War Memorial following the service.

Baptist Church

THIS week's service will be led by Norman Gulliver from Eden Baptist Church.

A reminder that our second coffee morning of the month will be held at 10am on November 18. All welcome. Girls Brigade is on Fridays at 6pm.

As a membership we seek to outreach throughout Little Thetford and surrounding areas. We would like to encourage everyone who may not have attended church for some time to come and join a service. All welcome.

Methodist Church

SUNDAY'S service at 10am was led by Colin Nickless. In the afternoon the congregation joined the Remembrance Day Service at St Andrew's Church.

Sunday: service will be led by Terry Day. There is no service at 5pm

Soham Methodist Church has had extensive renovation work carried out on the adjoining Sunday School Room (hall), kitchen and toilets, including toilet facilities for the disabled which were paid for with the aid of a grant provided through the landfill tax credit scheme.

On November 28, Soham Methodist Church will be holding a re-opening celebration which will begin at 3pm with a service which will be attended by the Rev Graham Thomson, chair of the East Anglia District of the Methodist Church. The guest speaker will be Dr Richard Vautry, vice-president of the Methodist Conference.

The service will be followed by a tea and the day will be rounded off with a concert in the evening.

The hall may now be booked for any meetings, clubs, celebrations, training courses, exams, etc. (with a proviso that as a Methodist Church no alcohol is allowed on the premises) Further details may be obtained from the booking secretary, Lesley Watchorn on 01353 721669

Heartbeat Health Walk

ON November 2, 33 walkers plus the three leaders took part in a walk of 3.4 miles around Soham.

Over 60's Club

RUTH Ginn welcomed everyone to the meeting on November 6. Members enjoyed an afternoon's musical entertainment with Rev Tim Alban-Jones who played the piano and sang a variety of popular songs. Vera Seal organised the raffle and the ladies served refreshments. The meeting closed with the singing of the club hymn.

Soham The Fen and Barway WI

THE meeting was held in the coffee lounge at Keith Leonard House on November 6. President Sheila Knight welcomed everyone, including four guests. Jerusalem was sung and the business of the meeting gone through.

Yvonne Long introduced Bob Scott who spoke about his job as a glass blower and his hobby making glass animals and ornaments. His glass blowing demonstration was making a minute mouse and an owl on a log. Members were invited to have a try at blowing a glass bubble. There was a large selection of Bob's work on display for members to purchase if they wished. Gwen Bridgeman gave the vote of thanks. During refreshments the menu for the Christmas meal at Sergio's was passed around. Sheila organised the raffle and Bob judged the exhibition for a glass vase.

The next meeting at Keith Leonard House will be on February 5 at 7.30pm. The speaker will be Charles Garland. New members and guests welcome.

STRETHAM

Over 60's Club

MEMBERS enjoyed playing bingo in the church hall on November 4. Tea and biscuits were served by Dick Philips, Patrick Spencer, Joan Vail, Joan Lowe and Jean Wakefield. Last week Edith Sadler also helped on teas. A raffle took place.

The Christmas dinner will be held on December 16.

WARDY HILL

THERE were four tables in play at the dominoes held on October 30 in the social club when Mrs M Dewsbery was MC. St Andrew's Church

REV Teresa Dixon was the celebrant at the Remembrance Day service, which was attended by uniformed groups, British Legion and members of 115 Squadron.

This Sunday Holy Communion is at 10.30am.

On Tuesdays Holy Communion is celebrated at 10am.
