POLICE were forced to close a busy Ely road this afternoon (Tuesday) after a lorry became stuck under a railway bridge.

The emergency services were contacted at about 2.30pm after a large articulated lorry belonging to Dutch hauliers VOS, became wedged under the railway bridge along the B1382 Queen Adelaide Way.

The lorry was trying to pick up goods from Queen Adelaide based freight firm, Potters when it became stuck.

The driver of the vehicle said that it was his first trip to the Potters site and he had stopped locally to ask for directions. After receiving advice, the driver said he headed for the bridge but become stuck half way under, causing extensive damage to the lorry itself.

Engineers from Network Rail were also summoned to the scene along with recovery crews from Manchetts to asses any potential damage to the bridge but none was found.

Recovery crews managed to release the lorry by 3pm and the Highways Agency agreed to reopen the road.
