DRUG users and thieves invading the grounds of Ely Cathedral at night forced officials to take urgent action and put up a security fence.
But, council planners may yet have the final say as the fence was put up without planning permission, with the Chapter of Ely Cathedral now seeking retrospective permission from planning officers.
The fence is located along the eastern wall of the Almonry gardens, which is also adjacent to the Dean of Ely’s paddock.
In a statement sent to the council, a chapter spokesman said: “At the time of erection, no consultation occurred. The work was in response to an immediate need to increase security after an incident involving theft of lead from the Almonry roof.
“Drug use by frequent night-time intruders was also of great concern. Since erection, the cathedral’s fabric advisory committee have supported the planting of roses along the wall and fence to soften appearance and provide a thorny obstacle to intruders.”
A decision on the plans is expected within eight weeks. To view the plans, or to have a say, visit www.eastcambs.gov.uk.
