Visitors to Ely’s High Street on Saturday generously turned out their pockets to help the Ely Hereward Rotary Club’s fundraising effort for the End Polio Now campaign.
On a large wooden ruler, donations were laid out at £1 per foot, with each foot representing 10 doses of polio vaccine.
The 100 yard track was filled in just three hours, and was then started round again, finishing the day with a magnificent £432, with more donations promised.
Organiser Janet Porter said: “Donations came from everyone from toddlers to pensioners. Some of the youngsters had to ask what polio was but one local resident knew only too well having contracted polio in the 1950s during one of the last outbreaks in England.
“The money raised will go to help eradicate polio from the last three countries in the world in which it still occurs, and to stop the disease returning to the Middle East among refugees from the war in Syria.”
