The Ely Allotment Association has issues a warning to green-fingered thieves who have been pulling up crops.
On June 21, allotment owners at Bridge Fen, on the A142, near Ely, reported that entire rows of onions, beetroot and potatoes had been stolen by thieves, with other crops pulled up and discarded on the site.
But the allotment association has delivered a warning to any would-be thieves who are taking the vegetables away to eat, saying that they could be poisoning themselves.
A spokesman said: “On the night of June 21 whole rows of onions, beetroot and potatoes went missing from plots on Bridge Fen. Vegetables on other plots were pulled up and left on the ground.
“The police were informed and will be keeping an eye on the site. Our concern is for people who may be consuming these crops while being unaware they are potentially eating vegetables which may be unsafe because of spraying with fertilizer, pesticide or weed-killer.”
Contact Cambridgeshire police on 101 to report any suspicious activity.
