A two-cylinder petrol tractor dating back to 1916 was the star lot at a vintage and classic auction held in Sutton on Saturday.
The Overtime Model R was billed by auctioneers, Cheffins, as the oldest Overtime tractor still in existence and it sold for a whopping £34,500.
According to Cheffins, the Overtime was the British name for the American Waterloo Boy tractor, and the Model R was imported into the UK by L J Martin. In 1916, it would have sold for about £285.
Also at the auction, a steam traction engine made by JI Case and dating back to 1904 sold for £16,000. The engine was undergoing restoration in America when it was acquired and put up for auction.
A carriage made in 1877 by Maythorn of Biggleswade, and used by the Russell family of Bassingbourn sold for £1,800. The carriage was the property of Saffron Walden Museum but it was decided that there was no longer room for it in the collection.
A classic Triumph motorcycle dating back to 1956, and with only 23,000 miles on the clock, sold for £5,000.
In all, there were almost 2,200 lots.
