The work, which took almost a month, saw improvements to visibility at the junction with Branch Bank and New River Bank.

It followed months of pressure from campaigners in Littleport to make it easier for motorists on the bridge to see traffic coming towards them.

Among the improvements are a new retaining wall with fencing, further back from the road. Street furniture has also been moved and the river bank has been re-profiled.

Welcoming the improvements, NE Cambs MP Steve Barclay, said: “I have been backing campaigners for safety improvements at the busy junction and am delighted the work has now been completed.

“I raised the issue in December last year and was delighted when the lead highways county councillor Mac Maguire and members of the bridge maintenance, safety audit and traffic signals team carried out a site visit in early January.

“Hopefully these improvements will help prevent accidents and save lives in the future.”

A petition to force Cambridgeshire County Council to act was launched last year when Little Downham teenager, Jack Ure, was killed in a three-car collision while trying to turn on to Branch Bank from the Sandhill Bridge.

Ely College Sixth Form student Jack, 18, was killed on June 20, just hours after completing his final A-level exam.
