Builders are scheduled to begin work on a new zebra crossing outside a primary school in Little Downham.

Balfour Beatty is expected to begin the work on Friday outside Downham Feoffees Primary School following months of fund-raising and campaigning by mum Emma Turrell.

Ms Turrell saw two appeals for funding from Cambridgeshire County Council turned down before she called on the support of councillors and her parish council, who helped push for a deal to be reached.

Work on the crossing had been expected to start in October but was beset by delays.

MP Steve Barclay, who also helped secure funding for the crossing, said: “I campaigned with Emma Turrell for the crossing and am delighted that the project, which had been expected to be carried out at the end of last year, is finally going ahead.

“I was happy to help with this campaign. A crossing outside the school was obviously needed and it is great that this potentially life-saving scheme is now being built.

“I would like to thank Emma for her tireless work in pushing for the crossing and also thanks should go to Councillor Anna Bailey and Little Downham Parish Council which, together with my pressure as the local MP, enabled us to secure the £15,000 funding.”
