The mayor of Ely joined visitors from Ribe in Denmark on Sunday to plant a tree marking 60 years of twinning.
The idea for the tree came from the Friends of Jubilee Gardens, who felt that the anniversary should be marked in a lasting way within their award winning garden.
The mayor, Councillor Lis Every, said: “A 60-year relationship with a twin town is a wonderful achievement. This tree will hopefully be a lasting reminder of our links with Ribe and a very colourful addition to the garden.
“On behalf of all those involved in the twinning, I would like to thank the Friends of Jubilee Gardens for this thoughtful gesture of support.”
Ely has been twinned with Ribe since 1956. A group of 22 visitors from Denmark visited Ely from April 30 to May 4, to coincide with the Eel Festival and to mark the start of the 60th year of the twinning.
After the tree planting, the mayor, and president of the Ribe Twin Towns Association, Tove Kjellerup, enjoyed a full programme of events over the weekend, including a visit to the old magistrates’ court and a formal dinner.
