The site of a former chapel in Little Thetford – expected to sell at auction for £10,000- was sold for more than four times the estimate.
The fifth of an acre of what agents called “amenity land with a range of outbuildings in a picturesque location near the River Cam” was sold by Cheffins for £43,000.
Cheffins director and property auctioneer Ian Kitson said: “Pre-auction interest had been considerable throughout the marketing period, and on the day of auction there were approximately 20 bidders in the room, confirming the demand.”
It is understood that it was formerly the site of a chapel. It is believed that the chapel was dismantled in 1571 and that some of the stone may have been used in the construction of St. George´s Church, Little Thetford.
The auction brochure noted that “there has been little activity on the land for some time. It is suggested that potential purchasers make enquiries to the East Cambridgeshire District Council regarding usage.”
The auction took place at Cheffins’ main offices in Clifton House, Clifton Road, Cambridge.
