Haddenham blood donor Michael Dittner has helped save the lives of over 1,000 people in the past 45 years.
Mr Dittner, 65, has donated blood at least 250 times and each donation can potentially save the lives of up to three people. His dedication was recognised at a special awards ceremony held in Newmarket and organised by the NHS Blood and Transplant.
Mr Dittner, who has also donated platelets, said: “I was a student when I first began donating blood. I’ve been donating over 45 years, it’s a quick process, the benefits are immense, and you never know, you may need it someday.”
In general, as long as you are fit and healthy, weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are aged between 17 and 66 (up to 70 if you have given blood before) you should be able to give blood. If you are over 70, you need to have given blood in the last two years to continue donating.
