Commuters could benefit from an extra 150 spaces being planned as part of an extension to the Angel Drove car park, Ely.
The £3 a day park – a short walk from the rail station- is being extended by East Cambridgeshire District Council.
Its commercial services committee has been told there is a need to provide additional spaces to meet the needs of commuters.
“Land has been identified and negotiations are in place to acquire sufficient land to provide 150 spaces,” says a report to councillors. The cost will be considerably lower than an earlier option.
A decision on acquiring the land is expected as early as February and the council is confident the extra spaces can be available soon after that.
If negotiations break down or they face unforeseen circumstances the committee will be told “19 additional long stay spaces could be provided via Cambridgeshire Business Car Park”.
The committee, meeting on Wednesday, will hear an update on plans to provide extra spaces at Littleport rail station.
An extra 80 spaces are being considered. Although lacking a completion date the committee will hear the council is “on target to provide viable options by Spring 2016.”
