The first season in a new league can be a daunting prospect for some sports teams – but not for East Cambs Warriors’ under 16s basketball team, who have roared to the Peterborough Basketball League Division Three title in style.

The young players from around Fenland not only secured the league title, but did it by going the whole season unbeaten – an achievement the team’s head coach Rob Knapper has labelled as “tremendous.”

The Warriors, who have only been a club for two years, completed their first ever season on Friday February 26, with the team winning all of their matches with double-figure victories.

East Cambs Warriors - a combination of players from Witchford Warriors and Ely Flames – kicked off their season in November 2015, coming up against Huntingdon Hawks and Nene Valley Venom, and finished their title-winning campaign last month.

Head coach Rob Knapper said: “For us to achieve what we have done in two years is brilliant; not only for the club, but for the young players on the team that represent schools and the community of East Cambs and Fenland.

“I know how hard they have worked over the years and even though we have suffered some heavy losses in other leagues, they boys have always given everything that the coaches and I have asked. They have come back every week and given their all in training and matches.

“As a club this is tremendous for us. It is our first ever title and silverware ever and that is very special to all of us, but especially to the boys that have played in the team. They will always have the honour of winning the club’s first ever title.”

East Cambs Warriors Basketball Club have four teams at Under 14, Under 16, Under 18 and senior level. The club play in the Norfolk Junior league at Under 14 and under 16 level and in the Peterborough League at Under 16 and Under 18 level.

The club’s senior team compete in the Nene Valley League.
