Three fire and rescue crews joined police and paramedics on the B1112 at Eriswell just after 6.30am where a male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s name and age have not been revealed, but RAF Mildenhall confirmed on its Facebook page later in the day one of their airmen was the victim.

“We will release more information as it is available,” it said.

“We ask that you respect the next of kin by not posting identifying information on social media. Please remember to always leave extra time in your schedule when commuting in this area, and always drive safely.”

The road was closed for several hours after the accident, which involved three vehicles between the junctions of Lord’s Walk and Eriswell Road.

Reacting to the news last night, the county’s police and crime commissioner Tim Passmore said: “I was really sad to hear of another tragic incident and fatality on Suffolk’s roads and as always my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the bereaved. What I can say is that road safety and trying to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries is a top priority and will continue to be top priority in the police and crime plan.”

One woman, who ambulance crews said was in her 50s, suffered pelvic and neck injuries, but was not thought to be in a critical condition. Other occupants involved were said to be “walking wounded”.

Eriswell Road connects the two US air bases, close to the B1112.
