The Lions Club of Littleport, New Century Lions and junior members, Leos, joined together on Saturday for a conservation task at Littleport’s Peacock’s Meadow woodland community garden in Limes Close.
The Lions rolled up their sleeves and set to work clearing brambles and ditches, including a large section of a drainage ditch that had been overgrown for years.
Lions spokesman David Ellis said: “We were blessed with good weather, and although it was hard work, it was a very sociable event with a satisfying outcome.”
Deborah Curtis, chairman of the Friends of the Woodland Garden Committee, said: “As well as looking unsightly, the rubbish that was mostly rusty wire, cans, plastic and glass bottles, was a danger to wildlife. Not any more though.
“The ditch is now cleared and the water should start moving again, providing a valuable boost to our wild plants and creatures.
“In fact, while the Lions were working, a frog popped out of the bank, as if to say thank you.”
Deborah enthused: “The Friends of Peacocks Meadow would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the Littleport Lions for carrying out this work on behalf of our community.”
