Cadet flight sergeant Rory Donoghue, who accompanied his junior cadets on the course, said: “Visiting 614 Squadron at Swanton Morley this weekend was a fantastic opportunity for some of our younger cadets.

“Before a recruit first joins the air cadets the thought of them flying in a glider -with an instructor- let alone taking control and flying themselves must seem like a daunting prospect.

“But the Air Cadet progressive training syllabus means that even the youngest cadets are taught in a step by step manner that builds towards their first flight so it’s far more than just a ‘joy ride’.

The staff at 614 Squadron are all eagerly awaiting the arrival of their newly refurbished gliders, but in the meantime they are giving up their weekends to train cadets on the Part Task Trainers.

“We all had a great day and the cadets learned so much from the pilot instructors,” Flt. Sgt Donoghue continued.

“You’d think from their smiles on the cadets faces that they had been flying in the air rather than on the ground in flight simulators, that’s how interesting the VGS Staff made the day for them.

“We can’t wait to visit Swanton Morley again and get airborne either virtually or for real”
