WASTE chiefs are egging people on to recycle their rubbish this Easter at Ely's Grunty Fen recycling centre.
Cambridgeshire residents are already recycling champions with a recycling rate of over 43 per cent compared to an average 23 per cent across the country.
Opening times at the centre will not be affected by the Easter break and on Saturday and Sunday rubbish can be recycled between 9am and 4pm.
More than 290,000 tonnes of waste is produced every year in the county and with stringent legislation and increasing fees for waste disposal, the need for recycling becomes more important. Last year Cambridgeshire County Council spent over £600,000 on landfill tax alone and this is going up by £3 per tonne each year.
Cambridgeshire County Council waste campaigns officer, Victor Perez said: "We would like to see all of our residents take their recyclables to the household waste recycling centres.
Recycling is not a seasonal activity and everyone can take part in it, whether it's large electrical appliances, cardboard boxes, empty wine bottles or batteries the recycling centres will take them all.
