A BENCH was placed at Wicken Pond on Sunday in memory of a well-known woman who was born at the pub which still stands at the pond.
Eileen Nixon, who was born at the Red Lion in 1921, died in Truro, Cornwall, on May 3, following a long illness, and the bench has been provided by her children Richard, Lois and Marion, and her grandchildren.
"Eileen loved Wicken and Ely and we hope the bench will ensure that she is not forgotten locally either," said her Lois Lloyd.
Eileen Nixon ran Harveys, the High Street haberdashery, tailor and milliner in Ely, for many years with her husband Jack Harvey.
Members of Wicken Parish Council were present at the unveiling of the bench, along with some of Eileen's friends.
"We wish to thank the council, particularly Jack White, for their kind help and support, at long distance, in organising the bench and its sitting in a place which meant so much to Eileen," Mrs Lloyd said.
