THE manager of Hennessy's Fish Bar in Ely has handed over a cheque for more than £1,000 to St Mary's Primary School, following a charity day at the Market Place shop earlier this month.
Danny Hennessy offered discounted chips, face-painting, children's rides and a raffle on the packed day, and raised £1,078 in the process.
Headteacher James Hickish said: "We are absolutely thrilled that Danny and his staff have done this for our school - when Danny mentioned it to me on the phone, I jumped at it.
"The school is trying very hard to work with the rest of the community and on this occasion, the community came to us," he said.
The money will be used to plant a new garden for the school's pupils.
Mr Hennessy said: "It's good for us and it's good for the community - I'd like to say thank you to all of my staff who worked for free for the day."
He added that an Ely man, Mr Gains, won the raffle on the day, entitling him to a year's free fish and chips.
