ELY butcher David Bent got to fulfil his ambition of seeing the ruined Inca city of Macchu Picchu, despite being rushed to hospital with a torn tendon on the way there.

Mr Bent, of Bent and Cornwell Quality Meats in Market Place, was on a 10-day walking trip in Peru to raise money for Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, when he tore his Achilles tendon.

Without realising what had happened, Mr Bent continued his trek with son Martin for two days before his calf became so swollen he could not continue.

"I took five different forms of transport to the hospital," he said.

"I was stretchered off the mountain on to a train, then I took a motorcycle rickshaw, a taxi and an ambulance."

Mr Bent spent a day being treated before he was driven to Macchu Picchu to complete his trip.

"Despite what happened, the trip was absolutely superb - I did struggle, but the scenery and the people were fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed myself."

Mr Bent has raised £2,900 for Great Ormond Street, and hopes to collect more money from sponsors.

He raised money last year on a hike along the Great Wall of China, and the experience in Peru has not deterred him from taking part in future hikes.

"I have the application form for the next one to Namibia," he said.
