LITTLEPORT Leisure Centre manager Andy Rutterford has raised about £700 by playing 12 hours of badminton.

Mr Rutterford was sponsored to play a number of matches against members of the leisure centre, taking short breaks in between games.

He played between 10am and 10pm with his opponents ranging from the centre's best players to his 13-year-old daughter.

This is part of a series of fund-raising activities to be carried out by leisure centre staff and committee members, to pay for a £38,000 electricity bill - as reported in the Ely Standard on January 25. The leisure centre's bill accumulated over six years after an error in the way the meter was read.

Mr Rutterford's 17-year-old son David was joined by Robbie Drever, Kirsten Gayfer and Samantha Nunn on a seven-mile sponsored walk on Monday when they raised about £1,000, and the leisure centre hosted a fundraising dance on Saturday.

Mr Rutterford said: "We're looking to do a lot more in the summer and to raise as much money as we possibly can to get us out of this financial stickiness.
