CONSERVATIONISTS have found rare bitterns nesting at Kingfisher's Bridge near Soham.

It is the first time the rare birds have been recorded nesting in the fens since the Second World War.

The RSPB claims it is evidence of the wading bird's recovery in the UK.

Meanwhile, campaigners fighting to save Roswell Pits for wildlife have signed up the 500th member to their action group.

Members of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Ely were out in force on Saturday manning a market stall in the city to mark their success and signing up more support.

They are campaigning against plans to develop the pits which they claim will ruin the area and drive away wildlife.
