ELY'S Christmas celebrations got underway on Friday as crowds gathered for the Big Switch On in Market Square. Liam Fairhurst did the honours and switched on the city lights at 6.45pm.
Crowds were entertained by Star Radio's Mark Peters, Ely's mayor Ron Bradney and a surprise appearance from X-Factor's Daniel, the former ballet star who left the show in week two. Entertainment was also provided by rising star Jez-O and local dance groups.
Down the road, more than 120 people packed in to Oliver Cromwell's House for a Christmas lights tie-in event during the lights switch on. Visitors had the chance to look round the house with a glass of mulled wine and mince pies for the one-off price of £1.
