THREE men involved in "a classic drunken punch up" in the centre of Ely were identified by CCTV footage.

And this week all three - Thomas Constable, 21, Lee Creak, 20, and 18-year-old Jake McAllister, appeared in court and admitted a charge of affray.

Constable, who had to be sprayed with CS gas after using foul language as he was arrested, also admitted resisting a police officer.

Prosecutor Delia Matthews told city magistrates how CCTV operators filmed the brawl. Creak first approached three people, and Constable started to punch one of the men. McAllister walked into the crowd and started punching out at random, and Creak got involved in a fight with another man.

A group of people were followed, and McAllister waded in, punching and kicking. Creak was seen to punch a male three times and then kick him in the back, Constable delivered a series of punches, and McAllister punched a man who had lost his top during the melee.

Constable, who kept falling over, stamped on a man's back, and there was some pushing and shoving.

None of the victims made a complaint, said Mrs Matthews. McAllister told police he had seen a fight and decided to join in. He said it had been "the drink talking."

Creak said he was in a chip shop with Constable, and when his friend got involved in a fight, he helped him. He could remember little about the incident and was ashamed.

Constable could remember nothing before being arrested, but knew his behaviour was unacceptable.

Mitigating, Claire Bennett said Creak and McAllister had been shocked to see their behaviour on CCTV.

"Clearly this was not a one sided incident, everyone involved seems to have given as good as they got," she said. "No victim came forward; maybe no one feels they were blameless."

Creak, of High Barns, Ely; and McAllister, of Bentham Way, Ely; are to be sentenced by magistrates on November 29. Constable, of Ten Mile Bank, Littleport, was committed for sentence to Cambridge Crown Court.
