A MOTORIST who knocked a cyclist off her bicycle in Ely has been fined £160 for careless driving.

Twenty-one-year-old Gradley Cater told city magistrates he had misjudged the speed of the approaching bicycle as he turned across her path.

The accident happened on Back Hill at Ely on May 17, prosecutor Matthew Bradbury told the court. The cyclist sustained serious injury.

"An independent witness says the car pulled across the path of the cyclist," he added.

Writing to the court, Cater, of Centre Road, Soham, said he lost sight of the cyclist as she rode down Back Hill.

"This was a genuine mistake for which I am sorry," he added.

Cater had four points endorsed on his driving licence, and he must pay £35 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
