The Bishop of Ely helped to unveil the Royal Charter of the Thomas Parsons Charity, given by Charles I, with Oliver Cromwell's signature on one of the charity's books.
The Thomas Parsons Charity dates back as far as the 15th Century, when a rich landowner from East Cambridgeshire died and left money and land in the trust of the cathedral, for Ely's poor.
The charity owns land in Ely, and the most visible are the almshouses on Thomas Parsons Square in Ely.
The ledger and Royal Charter are on display to the public at Ely Museum, the Old Gaol, Market Street. A small admission charge applies.
