THIS month we were treated to a very entertaining talk and slide show by Bill Morris, on the subject of 'fellow travellers in the greenhouse and surrounding areas'. We were not quite sure what to expect, but it soon became apparent that he was talking about the various insects and animals which live in our gardens. These can be divided up into pests and friends. The pests include red spider mites, mealy bugs, wooly aphids, whitefly, greenfly and vine weevil. The friends include ladybirds, spiders, some caterpillars and the friendly robin who will eat vine weevil larvae if you leave them out on a saucer for him. Bill showed us many close up pictures of the insects and also pictures of the damage some of them can cause to our plants. He also advised us on how to use organic means of pest control.

After question time, Bill was thanked by our chairman John Groves for providing such an interesting talk.

Our next meeting will be on October 8 at 7.45pm in the Brooklands Centre Village Hall when the speaker will be Tony Arnold who will give a talk on "gardens of China". Non-members are welcome to come along. The entry fee is £2, which includes tea and biscuits after the talk.
