AN ambitius prject t prvide a play area fr yungsters and a meeting place fr teenagers in Frdham has mved a step nearer with a £20,000 grant.

The first phase f the £55,000 scheme at Frdham recreatin grund can g-ahead but parish cuncillrs are struggling t cme up with the rest f the mney.

Once cmpleted, the play area will include a yuth shelter and rller skating area, and it is hped a new path can be laid fr children walking t schl after the present ne has sunk int the grund and becme slippery.

Frdham district cuncillr Michael Allan said: "I'm surprised there hasn't been an accident. We want t encurage parents t park next t the recreatin grund and walk thrugh."

East Cambridgeshire district cuncillrs have agreed a £20,000 grant fr the play area prject, and a £30,000 grant is being sught frm the landfill tax scheme WREN and the Safer Rutes t Schl initiative.

Frdham Parish Cuncil has cntributed £5,000 twards the prject.

Thanks t the £20,000 grant wrk can nw start n the yuth shelter and a netball practice area, but the new path alne will cst £20,000, said parish cuncil chairman Hugh Palmer.

Plans will have t be phased in ver the next year, and the deadline fr the path is set fr September, befre bad weather sets in.

Peter Cresswell, chairman f East Cambridgeshire District Cuncil's cmmunity services cmmittee, said: "The cuncil apprved the maximum grant and is cmmitted t helping Frdham create a play area fr all peple f all ages.

"The district cuncil is wrking clsely with the parish cuncil t help it find funds t finish the wrk.
