A man, who lives near to where a 20-year-old man was killed, warned that more fatalities will follow after witnessing 11 crashes along the road in just nine weeks.

David Jermy lives along Branch Bank, Littleport, where Jahmel Grant was killed after a BMW he was travelling in collided with another car last Wednesday.

Mr Jermy says neighbours labelled the road an accident black spot with many thinking it is one of the most dangerous roads in the country.

“There are accidents as soon as there’s a bit of rain,” Mr Jermy said. “Vehicles just don’t adjust their speed to the conditions.

“People just spin off the road. We had a nice hedge outside our house which now has a big hole in it because cars keep skidding off the road and going into it.

“I’ve had to provide quite a number of cups of coffee to people who are waiting to be picked up after crashing outside my house.

“I’ve written a letter to Highways England asking for a 40mph limit or speed cameras to be put in place, because I’m certain that there will be more fatalities until something is done.”

Mr Jermy, who moved to the area from Cambridge in April, says he was told to ‘get used to it’ by police when he challenged them after a car crashed into the fence outside his home three weeks after he moved in.

He said: “I had a knock at the door and there was a policeman standing there. He asked me if I owned the fence and I said ‘yes’ and he handed me the driver’s insurance details.

“I then asked him if anything was going to be done about it and he simply said ‘get used to it’ and that it’s highways that are responsible for the road.

“I was told that until there’s a cluster of accidents that results in injuries or fatalities then nothing will be done.”

Since then, Mr Jermy has seen another 10 vehicles crash along the road, and says that more lives will be lost if speed restrictions are not put in place.

He said: “I cut the patch of grass where they all crash, and I fear going out there.

“If it’s been raining and I’m out there and a car comes along too quickly then I won’t be around to cut the grass anymore, it’s as simple as that.”

“It makes me feel like I’m living along the most dangerous road in the Ely area.”

When questioned on the spate of accidents along Branch Bank, a Cambridgeshire County Council spokesman said: “While it would be wrong to comment on the recent accident, in which the driver left the scene and the Police are investigating, we can confirm this did not happen at the spot where there has been complaints.

“We have installed measures to warn drivers of the bends and encouraging them to drive to the conditions, including new chevrons. The Council has also investigated claims of trees dropping sap or leaves. There are trees on private land which cast a shadow on the road. We believe this means that these overshadowed sections of roads may dry more slowly than other parts, resulting in some areas being wet.

“However, road safety is one of our main priorities and we continue to monitor the situation.”
