CONSERVATIVE candidate Steve Barclay has praised volunteers for their hard work during the General Election campaign.

Arriving at the count at Wisbech's Hudson Leisure Centre, Mr Barclay said his team had worked very hard and added that they were "not going to take anything for granted".

Amid speculation from Conservative councillors that he has increased his majority, Mr Barclay said he would "wait and see" about the result and didn't want to "pre-judge the count".

He added that he had worked closely with his predecessor Malcolm Moss and that he had focused on becoming a strong part of the community in Fenland.

He said: "It is important that people see you in the High Street. That is where you find out what is going on."

Mr Barclay said he had been up at 6am on polling day but laughed off suggestions that Peter Roberts, who has gone 40 hours without sleep, had outdone him.

Mr Barclay said: "He was obviously inspired by David Cameron.
