ELY celebrates its historic Eel Day next month and the Ely Standard has teamed up with the organisers and Star Radio to find a member of the public who wants to play a starring role at this year's event on May 2.

For the last two years, the event has included a Town Crier Competition with contestants from all over the country competing for the prestigious title. This year, competition organiser and Ely's own town crier Avril Hayter-Smith is looking for a member of the public to write a 'cry' which she will perform on the day and then the lucky winner will get to read out their winning 'cry' later in the day.

The winner will be also be treated to a VIP day out on Eel Day. They will be Avril's guest for the day; enjoying lunch and dinner and will be asked to act as a judge for the 'content of cry' section in the main Town Crier Competition. The lucky winner will get to read their 'cry' out on air on Star Radio.

How To Enter:

Write a 'cry' of 70-125 words on all the things you love about Ely. The winner must be available all day on May 2 and also be prepared to read their 'cry' out on the day.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about Ely and is prepared to shout it from the rooftops!

Send your entry to: the Ely Standard, 38 Market Street, Ely, Cambs, CB7 4LS or email: debbie.davies@archant.co.uk

Entries will be judged by town crier Avril Hayter-Smith and must reach us by April 24 and the five finalists will be judged on air on Star Radio on April 28.
