AFTER the fiasco of the street lights in the trees on Lower Carter Street and all the poles having to be moved to the other side of the road it seems that the highways people still can't get their heads around what trees are all about. I was up at the Downfields filling station the other day trying to decide between a fortnight in Spain or three litres of diesel when one of our few remaining farmers wandered over. He was quite taken with all the planting that has been done around the cycle bridge. He was particularly taken with the fact that young trees have actually been planted under the bridge. Give them a few years and we won't be looking for cyclists anymore, we'll be wondering where the bridge went. I expect that, like the Carter Street fiasco, this is nobody's fault, but we, as taxpayers, will have to pick up the bill.
