I ARRIVED at the Market Square at 11am to await the parade from Ely Cathedral to the Market Square. The parade arrived at about 11.45am and was led by the Ely Military Band, followed by 260 Royal Engineers from Waterbeach Barracks, and them came all the ex servicemen from World War Two and other Conflicts around the world. We also had the Army cadets, Air Force cadets, cubs, guides, police, fire service, Red Cross, and other dignitaries. The Market Square was full of people on parade and what space was left was full of the public that had turned up in force to watch the parade. There were Standards from all different associations that lined the way to the memorial and then the wreath layers were called and in their threes they made their way down to lay their wreaths. The mayor of Ely, Richard Hobbs, gave his address to all the parade and the spectators, he thanked everyone for turning out for the parade and thanked all the people who were out collecting for the British Legion, and all those who gave generously to the fund for the troops and I must thank the mayor of Ely for his fund-raising of money to install a new plaque in memory of men who lost their lives in conflicts after World War Two and the painting of the emblems and new gates and railings which now has greatly enhanced the War Memorial. Well done, mayor of Ely. EDDIE HOLDEN Ely Road Little Downham
