THE other day, Jake the spaniel and I were wandering down Fordham Road on our usual lunchtime walk when we noticed a tanker parked at the top of Regal Lane. We'd been talking about all the new houses that are being built and are going to be built in Soham and wondering about the facilities all the new townspeople will need. We are assured that facilities like schools, doctors, water and sewerage will catch up in no time, which is quite reassuring to those who are capable of being reassured, which brings us back to the tanker at the top of Regal Lane. The tanker was parked next to the pumping station and appeared to be sucking out the excess effluent from the system.

Now this end of town has yet to benefit from the break-neck development of the northern part, so how come the sewage system needs assistance already? Jake seemed quite happy with the stink coming from the operation, but it had certainly stopped the people from Searle's from eating their dockey outside and the diners in the Cherry Tree were firmly behind closed doors. If this is the sort of performance we are going to get without extra houses could we at least have the sewage updated before too many more are built?
