THE College Players who have staged regular productions over the years have metamorphosed into the Phoenix Players of late.

The new group had two performances over the weekend. We couldn't attend the Soham one as it clashed with the Reg Collen Cup at the Town Ground. (The Wetheralls retained the trophy with a 5-1 win over arch rivals St Andrew's.)

So, on Saturday, we checked our passports and travel insurance and journeyed all the way to the Victoria Hall in Fordham in the rain.

There were two short plays, Pastiche and Last Tango. The class and finesse of the group shone through in the second piece. When one of the characters needed to read from a paper he didn't pick up just any old rag, he chose the Ely Standard.

With discrimination and taste like that the Phoenix Players will obviously go far - and deservedly so.
