ONE or two features of life in Elizabeth's day might just go down well nowadays. The other evening I was standing outside Lloyd's TSB Bank chatting to one of Soham's finest when a group of youngsters bundled across the road from Fountain Lane. As is the way of young people they immediately walked straight back to where they started from.

One of their number in a fetching grimy white baseball cap lagged behind. He then picked up one of the cones from the hole in the church wall and threw it down in the churchyard. After lurching about for a bit he punched the footpath sign with both hands and wandered off.

You get the feeling that in Elizabeth's time he would have been a prime candidate for the stocks, or, perhaps he's a bit too tall and a quick beheading wouldn't have gone amiss. That way you could tell the SNOBS members quite easily, their baseball caps would fit directly onto their shoulders.
