BRIGHT Little Downham youngsters rejected a skate park for the village fearing it would be a target for vandals, and opted for a youth club instead.

Their decision led to a thriving club, with more than 30 members, and resulted in a cut in the amount of vandalism in the

village, club organisers believe.

Through the club, youngsters got to know village Police Community Support Officer Julie Collins and the friendship has also led to fewer problems in the village.

Over the summer the youngsters enjoyed two specially organised events - a Youth Awareness Day split across two days, funded by Connexions and organised by the village's Youth Council with the help of trained adult volunteers.

Braving persistent showers, the youngsters enjoyed a bouncy castle, Gladiator dual and a bungee run. Ice-cream and candy floss was provided along with a DJ, barbecue and free food. Five new members were also signed up.

On the second day the youngsters enjoyed a mobile skatepark used by bikers and roller bladers, and a barbecue. Another four new members were signed up.

The Youth Club is held in the Little Downham Sports Pavilion on a Monday night from 7-9pm for youngsters in school Year 7 and above.

If anyone would like to become a volunteer please come along to the club and contact one of the adults. For further information contact Carol Hebbard on 01353 698338 or by email at carol@hebbard3d.com
