THE genius who puts lights in trees and leaves lampposts stuck in the road has obviously been about for a while.

Nowadays, lots and lots of homes have a car, some two, some more. Many of these homes were built in days when owning your own transport was very rare (unless it was a pushbike) so there is little or no provision to park a car.

Consequently, lots of vehicles are left on the road because there is no alternative.

In their wisdom, and for once it does show signs of wisdom, the powers-that-be have put in laybys here and there to clear the carriageway a bit. Where this falls down is allowing accesses over the laybys.

One instance is on Brook Street. There is a long and useful provision for parking off the road. There are also five rights of way over the layby so most of it is unusable.

I wonder who thought that one out.
